Kia recalls 39,536 2021–2023 Sorentos over HVAC wiring fire risk

A recall has begun in the U.S. for 2021–2023 Kia Sorento crossovers, covering 39,536 vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The number is significant, and the underlying risk deserves prompt attention.

The issue is a potential fire hazard tied to the heating and air-conditioning wiring. Regulators report that some vehicles were built with wiring of a smaller gauge than specified. As a result, the connection between the blower-motor resistor and its connector can overheat, causing localized melting. The chain of causes here is straightforward, which makes the fix equally clear-cut.

The hazard can surface with the ignition on and the blower set to the third speed. Warning signs may include a non-functioning blower, a burning odor, or even smoke from the vents—signs worth taking seriously.

The investigation began after a fire involving a 2023 Sorento LX. The review identified 25 vehicles with damaged wiring, one instance of a connector fire, and another fire. No injuries or crashes were reported.

Kia will replace the wiring harness and the blower-motor resistor free of charge at authorized dealers. Owner notification letters are scheduled to begin in November.
