Black screen in reverse: Honda pulls in almost 60,000 EVs for a camera fix

A bonding flaw in the camera housing lets moisture corrode the electronics, leaving drivers with a black screen when reversing.

Honda has announced a recall of its Prologue and Acura ZDX electric vehicles in the United States over a rearview camera defect. NHTSA campaign 26V306 covers 59,887 cars: 44,199 Honda Prologue units from the 2024–2025 model years and 15,688 Acura ZDX units from 2024.

The cause turned out to be the camera itself, not the software. Its housing may have been improperly bonded, allowing the adhesive to separate over time, moisture to seep inside and the electrical components to start corroding. As a result, the image on the screen becomes blurred or distorted, or disappears entirely, leaving the driver with a black screen.

For a large EV that is no small matter: while reversing, the driver loses part of their view and the risk of a crash or injury goes up. By 7 May 2026, Honda had received 2,411 warranty claims related to the issue, but no reports of injuries or fatalities.

Dealers will replace the rearview camera free of charge with an improved part that uses a different bonding process. The production defect was fixed on 9 June 2025, and notifications are scheduled to go out to owners starting 6 July 2026.

SPEEDME journalists noticed an interesting detail in the NHTSA letter: the agency stated that Honda may have known about the problem more than five business days before filing its report. For owners, however, the more important point is this — if the camera starts to fog up or fade out, do not wait for a letter; check the VIN and book an appointment with a dealer.
