Hummer shrinks down and gets angrier: GMC unveils the concepts fans will want built

GMC has revealed Hummer X SUV and pickup concepts — mid-size off-road EVs with 37-inch tires, beadlock wheels, Multimatic shocks and a scout drone.

GMC has shown a pair of Hummer X concepts — an SUV and a pickup. These aren’t future production models but a showcase of ideas from GM’s new design center in Pasadena. Still, they look like the Hummer many had been waiting for: smaller, cleaner in proportion, and meaner off-road.

Both concepts are mid-size. The Hummer X SUV is 4,783 mm long, 2,032 mm wide and 1,852 mm tall, with a 2,946 mm wheelbase. Ground clearance is 335 mm; approach and departure angles are 44 and 46 degrees. The pickup is longer at 5,265 mm, with a 3,320 mm wheelbase and 318 mm of clearance. Next to the huge production Hummer EV, these numbers feel a lot closer to a real off-road tool.

The hardware is built for serious trails: 35–37-inch Goodyear tires, beadlock wheels, Multimatic dampers, heavy underbody protection and removable fender flares. GM frames it as a vehicle for people who don’t just drive, they build.

Inside there are stackable displays. Two screens for the highway, up to five more added for off-road duty. There’s even a scout drone: it flies ahead along the route, beams terrain data back, and then docks itself when it’s done.

A production Hummer X isn’t happening, and that’s the most frustrating part. GM is using the concept as a lab for materials, recycled plastics, mechanical fasteners in place of adhesives and easier disassembly. But if the company ever decides to turn the Hummer EV into a real rival for the Bronco, Wrangler and the upcoming Scout, the sketch is almost ready.
