BMW M is preparing a technical update for the S58 inline-six. From July 2026, the BMW M3 and M4 will get the new BMW M Ignite system, with the M2 following in August. It is a pre-chamber ignition setup designed to improve combustion efficiency under high loads.

The system works through an additional small combustion chamber with its own spark plug and ignition coil. Under high loads, the mixture ignites in this chamber first, after which flame jets spread more rapidly into the main cylinder. The result should be lower fuel consumption under load, especially on track. The main reason behind the update, however, is compliance with the Euro 7 standard, which comes into force in November 2026.

Power figures for the revised engine remain unchanged. At the same time, the S58 also gains a higher compression ratio, optimised exhaust ports, new camshafts and pistons and, for the first time, turbochargers with variable turbine geometry.

The biggest story, though, surrounds the BMW M2. According to BMWBLOG, the first M2 with xDrive all-wheel drive could arrive in late summer 2026. The timing lines up with the M2’s switch to the updated S58. The BMW M2 xDrive has not been officially unveiled, although the all-wheel-drive version briefly appeared on BMW’s US website earlier.
