The 2027 Toyota GR86 grows up where it counts — and it isn't the styling
Toyota updates the GR86 for the 2027 model year: smoother throttle response, a reworked manual gearbox and SACHS dampers with Brembo brakes available across the range.
Toyota has updated the GR86 for the 2027 model year, even though a brand-new generation of the sports car is expected around 2028. The most important changes hide not in the styling but in how the car feels from the driver's seat: the throttle, the gearbox and the optional performance pack have all been sharpened.
The engine carries over — a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre flat-four with 228 hp and 249 Nm of torque. Drive goes to the rear wheels through a choice of six-speed manual or automatic. But Toyota has reworked the throttle calibration: response is now smoother and more linear. For everyday driving that means comfort; in quick corners it means more precise modulation of the torque.
The manual gearbox got attention too. Engineers reworked the shift between fourth and fifth, widening the chamfer on the shifter interlock by roughly 0.5 mm. It looks almost invisible, but these are exactly the details that matter in a car people buy for the way it shifts, not just for the numbers on the spec sheet.
The Performance Package is now available on every trim. It includes SACHS dampers and Brembo brakes: 4-piston front calipers with 325 mm discs and 2-piston rears with 315 mm discs. The combination should bring more confidence under braking and a clearer sense of what the car is doing through corners.
Safety has been beefed up too. The stereo camera's recognition area is nearly twice as wide as before, helping the adaptive cruise control read traffic ahead more reliably. A separate monocular camera has been added to detect objects close to the car at intersections.
The exterior gets a new Thunder paint colour, while the cabin gains the Cockpit Red package: red bolsters on the seats, red floor mats and red door inserts set against black Ultrasuede. Anyone who prefers something more restrained can still spec the all-black interior.
Prices haven't been announced yet. The base 2026 GR86 started at $31,400, and the updated car arrives this summer. Toyota hasn't tried to turn the GR86 into a different car — it has simply sharpened the qualities people buy it for.
