A 276-hp electric van that won't go past 132 km/h — Mercedes draws a hard line

The new electric Mercedes VLE 300 packs 276 hp, but pre-configured versions are electronically limited to 132 km/h — a touchy compromise, especially on German autobahns.

Mercedes-Benz pitched the new electric VLE as a spacious alternative to the classic minivan. Yet according to the German outlet Mercedes-Benz Passion, the VLE 300 is currently offered in pre-built versions with a 203 kW (276 hp) electric motor that share one controversial trait — top speed is capped at 132 km/h.

For a large electric van, that matters more than it sounds. Depending on trim, the VLE varies in equipment, payload and gross vehicle weight. Some versions stay under 3.5 tonnes, while others tip over the threshold. In several countries that raises questions not only about the required driving licence, but also about road restrictions and tolls.

The powertrain itself is hardly weak. Mercedes emphasises range, efficiency and long-distance comfort. But a 132 km/h ceiling is a visible compromise, especially in Germany, where parts of the autobahn network let drivers cruise far faster.

It is not yet clear whether a higher top speed will be unlocked later for a fee or reserved for other variants. So the central question for VLE buyers isn't just range and capacity, but whether such a speed cap fits the routes they actually drive.
