Volvo debuts multi-adaptive seatbelt for the all-electric EX60
Volvo Cars is staying true to its safety-first legacy, unveiling a new multi-adaptive seatbelt that will debut in the all-electric EX60 SUV. The innovation has already earned a spot on TIME magazine’s Best Inventions of 2025, reinforcing Volvo’s standing among the leaders in automotive safety.
The multi-adaptive belt is engineered around real-world driving conditions and the unique characteristics of each passenger, rather than a one-size-fits-all formula.
The head of the Volvo Safety Center noted that the company is proud to be recognized by TIME as a leader in safety.
Drawing on data from the car’s advanced sensors, the system dynamically adjusts protection while the vehicle is in motion.
For example, in a serious crash a larger occupant would receive a higher belt load to help reduce the risk of injury, whereas a smaller occupant in a less severe scenario would be protected with a gentler load. This is enabled by processing data on height, weight, and position.
What makes the concept especially promising is that the belt’s capabilities will improve over time through over-the-air updates—an approach that signals how restraint systems are becoming as software-defined as they are mechanical, quietly enhancing safety long after the car leaves the factory.
Earlier in 2024, Volvo’s Driver Understanding system was also named one of TIME’s best inventions. It helps detect when a driver is distracted or fatigued and provides additional support.
Together, these developments point to a more adaptive, data-led view of crash protection—one that aims to anticipate needs rather than simply react to them.
The Volvo EX60 with the new multi-adaptive seatbelt is scheduled to make its official debut on January 21, 2026.
