Tesla FSD pothole avoidance in 2026: what Elon Musk has promised
Elon Musk says pothole avoidance is coming to Tesla FSD. The feature has been listed as an upcoming improvement since FSD v14.3 and is still not available as a dedicated production function.
Elon Musk has once again promised Tesla owners a feature he first confirmed back in 2019: Full Self-Driving should be able to detect potholes on its own and adjust the car’s path to avoid them. Asked about it again, Tesla’s CEO replied only, “Coming soon” — without naming a software version or launch date.
This is no longer just an idea from social media. In the release notes for FSD (Supervised) v14.3, issued on April 7, 2026, pothole avoidance is explicitly listed among upcoming improvements. Nearly five months later, the feature is still on that list in the current FSD v14.3.8. Musk’s latest comment therefore confirms that the feature remains on Tesla’s roadmap rather than announcing it for the first time.
The story goes back much further. On April 7, 2019, Musk was asked whether Autopilot could adjust its path to avoid potholes, and he answered in the affirmative. Seven years later, Tesla still does not offer a separately announced production feature for that maneuver. The delay fits into the wider debate over the company’s long-running claims about the capabilities of FSD, which have also been challenged in U.S. litigation over earlier promises of fully autonomous driving.
Tesla already uses rough-road information in another way. The official Model S owner’s manual says that in the United States, adaptive air suspension can raise the vehicle in advance when approaching a rough stretch of road, using up-to-date map data. That can make poor pavement easier to cross, but it does not mean FSD is steering around the pothole itself.
Tesla itself stresses that today’s FSD remains a Supervised system and does not make the vehicle autonomous. In April, the company released v14.3 with an updated vision encoder and AI compiler and runtime rewritten on MLIR, which Tesla said improved response speed by 20%. The driver is still responsible for the road. That makes the ability to recognize something as ordinary as a pothole a useful test of how quickly software promises turn into real features.
