Nissan considers an IDx-inspired sports car and hints at Silvia

Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa said the company is considering a new sports car that could serve as the spiritual heir to the IDx Freeflow and IDx Nismo concepts first shown in 2013.

He noted that a car like this would help refresh the brand’s image and attract younger buyers, stressing that it’s not enough to set an accessible price—the car also has to spark an emotional response. That lands well: price gets people in the door, but a car’s character is what keeps them hooked.

Nissan previously shelved the IDx, citing overlap with the 370Z and a lack of suitable production capacity. Even so, the idea of a compact, rear-wheel-drive coupe remains close to the leadership’s heart. In a market ruled by crossovers, a clear, well-executed coupe can do more for credibility than any campaign.

Espinosa added that he would gladly bring back the storied Silvia, while acknowledging the project would need serious adaptation to meet modern safety standards and weight targets. If those plans take shape, a new Nissan sports car could reenter the performance arena and nudge the brand back toward the spirit that made its past models so compelling—a welcome sign that the company hasn’t forgotten what draws drivers to its badge.
