EV battery health after 150,000 km: AVILOO ranks EQA, IONIQ 5, i4, Tesla and Leaf

More than 500,000 AVILOO battery tests show how EVs age after 150,000 km. EQA, IONIQ 5 and BMW i4 lead, while Leaf ZE1 ranks last.

More than half a million diagnostics revealed a noticeable gap in traction-battery ageing. In AVILOO's ranking after 150,000 km, the Mercedes-Benz EQA retained a median 94.0% of its original SoH, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 93.8%, and the BMW i4 93.6%. At the bottom were the Renault Zoe at 87.3%, MINI Cooper SE at 87.1% and Nissan Leaf ZE1 at 86.7%.

Tesla placed below the middle of the list: Model Y recorded 90.3%, while Model 3 came in at 88.9%. These figures should not be read as an exact forecast for an individual car, however. AVILOO groups different battery variants within a model ranking, and the median describes the fleet rather than a specific vehicle.

There is an even more important finding for used-EV buyers. AVILOO's key takeaways mention a spread of up to 13.5 percentage points in SoH between individual cars of the same model, while the detailed breakdown at 150,000 km shows a maximum spread of 16.4 points. Two cars with the same badge and similar mileage can therefore differ substantially in battery condition and remaining driving range. When buying a used EV, the health of the specific battery matters more than the model's position in an overall table.

The methodology also needs some context. FLASH Test is neither a laboratory full-discharge test nor a simple reading of the value reported by the vehicle's standard BMS. It is a three-minute OBD diagnostic, after which AVILOO's algorithm calculates SoH using mileage, age, cycle count, cell-voltage deviation, energy counters and other parameters. The company's database now exceeds one million tests, while the current report uses more than 500,000 measurements collected from 2022 to 2026.

Other large datasets also suggest that battery age alone does not mean an expensive replacement is imminent. Recurrent analysed data from a community of more than 30,000 electric vehicles: among cars from model year 2022 and newer, the battery-replacement rate was 0.3%. The company itself cautions that its sample is not representative of the entire global EV fleet. For the used-car market, checking the actual SoH of a specific vehicle is therefore more useful than judging it only by brand, age and mileage.
