BMW active-suspension drift patent: how the rear-axle unloading system works

BMW has patented a chassis-based drift aid that briefly unloads the rear axle, reducing tire grip and the torque needed to start a slide.

BMW has proposed an unusual way to make initiating a controlled drift easier: instead of increasing torque at the rear wheels, the car would briefly reduce their vertical load. The active suspension would momentarily unload the rear axle, lowering tire grip and the amount of torque needed to break traction.

That is the principle described in patent application DE 10 2025 106 033.9. It was filed on February 18, 2025 and published by the German Patent and Trade Mark Office on August 20, 2026. The register still lists the document as a pending application, so it would be premature to describe the idea as a production-ready feature.

Instead of managing a drift through the engine, brakes or torque distribution, the electronics could use adaptive dampers or active roll stabilization. A short vertical impulse temporarily unloads the rear tires, making it easier to push them into a slide. According to the system description, the electronics also take vehicle speed and steering angle into account to limit the conditions in which the function can activate.

This differs noticeably from the current philosophy of BMW M models. The rear-wheel-drive BMW M2 with a six-speed manual, for example, still gives the driver a comparatively traditional set of tools for controlling the car. The new patent, by contrast, shifts part of the most difficult phase of drifting — the initial breakaway of the rear axle — to the chassis.

BMW is also experimenting with electronic intervention not only in vehicle dynamics but in what the driver feels. In the spring, another patent application described a feedback system for electronic steering in which controlled vibrations are intended to communicate information about grip and lateral loads. Both developments point in the same direction: electronics are no longer just correcting errors but are increasingly shaping the driving experience itself.

No production model is named for the new drift-assistance system. For now, it is more accurate to treat it as a BMW engineering idea rather than a future feature confirmed for the M2, M3 or M5. Even a published patent application does not guarantee that the mechanism will reach production.
