Tesla Cybercab manual controls: how the virtual joystick and emergency mode work
A Tesla Cybercab passenger found a service interface with a virtual joystick. Tesla documents confirm onboard manual controls for very short emergency moves.
The Tesla Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals, but the company has not completely eliminated the possibility of manual control. A passenger in Austin accidentally saw a service interface on the center screen with a virtual joystick, brake and other commands. The graphics responded to touch, but the car did not move — actual vehicle control likely requires additional authorization. The incident was captured on video on September 7.
The key point is not the software glitch itself. Tesla's official first-responder interaction plan confirms that the Cybercab has onboard manual controls. A responder can gain access after identity verification by a Tesla representative and manually move the robotaxi out of the way. The document specifically says this mode is intended only for a very short move.
There is also a separate restriction when the vehicle is being moved: if the Cybercab is rolled faster than 5 mph, or about 8 km/h, the parking brake engages. However, Tesla's document does not describe this as a speed limit for the on-screen joystick. The discovered interface is therefore better understood as a backup tool for briefly repositioning the car rather than a substitute for a steering wheel in normal driving.
This adds context to the Cybercab's September transition from demonstrations to real passenger rides. Tesla now confirms that steering-wheel-free Cybercabs are already carrying passengers in limited parts of Austin. The normal passenger interface has no driving controls — the screen is intended for trip functions, climate settings, entertainment and contacting support.
The Cybercab is still a full-fledged car rather than a remotely controlled cart. Previously disclosed EPA documents indicated a battery of about 48 kWh and a 163 kW traction motor. The latest detail shows that eliminating physical controls does not mean eliminating every backup method for manually moving the vehicle.
The glitch likely exposed a service interface before Tesla intended passengers to see it. The existence of a manual mode is already confirmed by the manufacturer's documentation; what remains unknown is the exact employee-access mechanism for the on-screen joystick and how it relates to the onboard controls described by Tesla.
