Suzuki launches first electric car in India with e Vitara production start

Suzuki Motor has announced a record $8 billion investment in India over the next five to six years while simultaneously starting mass production of its first electric vehicle, the e Vitara SUV, at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat plant.

The mid-sized e Vitara enters one of India’s most competitive SUV segments, aiming to rival the Hyundai Creta and Mahindra XEV 9e. Suzuki Motor Chairman Toshihiro Suzuki said the Gujarat facility is set to become one of the world’s largest car production hubs with an annual capacity of up to 1 million vehicles.

India will serve as Suzuki’s global hub for electric cars, with exports planned to 100 countries, including Japan and European markets. Despite a global slowdown in EV demand, the company hopes to defend its dominant position in India, Suzuki’s largest market by sales and revenue.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who attended the event, praised the initiative as a «big leap» toward the Make in India goal, stressing that Maruti symbolizes the strong ties between India and Japan.
