BYD solid-state battery in 2027: rollout timing and Blade Battery plans
BYD expects to begin demonstration use of solid-state batteries in vehicles from 2027, while large-scale deployment is planned only after 2030.
In 2027, BYD’s solid-state battery plans are expected to move from laboratory development into vehicles: the company aims to begin demonstration use of the technology. BYD has not yet named a specific model, battery capacity or driving range — this is a demonstration stage, not the start of mass sales.
This matches the earlier roadmap. Back in 2025, Sun Huajun, chief technology officer of BYD’s battery business, spoke about demonstration use of all-solid-state batteries from around 2027 and large-scale deployment only after 2030. The company chose a sulfide electrolyte and produced prototype cells with capacities of 20 and 60 Ah in 2024.
That means 2027 should not be read as BYD abandoning today’s Blade Battery. Li herself stressed in June that solid-state technology is not yet ready for the mass market, while the second-generation Blade Battery offers better efficiency and cost. That fits the company’s current strategy: BYD is already expanding use of its second-generation Blade Battery beyond its own vehicles.
Competitors are moving on almost the same timetable. Geely, for example, expects to move to pilot deployment of solid-state batteries in 2027 after testing a full-size battery pack in a vehicle.
The next truly important milestone will not be another laboratory figure, but BYD’s actual car. If the company reveals the model, pack capacity, energy density, charging speed and service life in 2027, the new technology can finally be compared with the production Blade Battery using vehicle-level rather than laboratory metrics.
