General Motors is recalling 306,511 Chevrolet and Buick crossovers in the United States because the rearview camera can display a distorted image or go completely blank. One of the most notable figures in the NHTSA documents is 33,365 field reports that GM considered potentially related to the issue during the suspect production period.
Campaign 26V539 covers the 2025 Chevrolet Trax, 2024–2026 Trailblazer, 2024–2025 Buick Envista and 2024–2026 Encore GX. A total of 306,511 vehicles are potentially affected, although GM estimates that about 10% actually contain the defect.
The cause is not software. The investigation found that plasma cleaning used to prepare the camera housing could have weakened the adhesive bond in some units. GM opened an investigation on May 20, 2025, closed it on September 4 after finding no clear trend, and opened a new investigation on March 25, 2026, after the number of reports increased. The company identified no crashes or injuries related to the issue.
The case also overlaps with two broader stories. All four models are among the compact crossovers around which GM is developing its production program in South Korea, while a similar rear-camera failure previously led to a recall of nearly 60,000 Honda and Acura vehicles.
In the NHTSA database, the campaign is listed as 26V539000; GM’s internal recall number is A262554900. VINs became available for lookup on August 20, 2026, and owner notification letters were scheduled to begin on September 16. Dealers will inspect the camera and, if necessary, replace it free of charge with a part produced outside the suspect production period.
