Volkswagen T-Cross TSI Active Essential in Japan: price, engine and equipment
The limited T-Cross TSI Active Essential costs 2,999,000 yen in Japan, 11.8% less than the regular Active, without changing the engine or DSG.
Volkswagen has introduced a special T-Cross TSI Active Essential in Japan, pushing the crossover's price below the 3 million yen threshold. The limited edition costs 2,999,000 yen, while the regular TSI Active is priced at 3,399,000 yen.
The difference is 400,000 yen, or 11.8% compared with the standard version. Production of the T-Cross TSI Active Essential is limited to 200 vehicles.
The technical package remains unchanged. The crossover uses a 1.0-liter three-cylinder TSI turbo engine producing 116 hp and 200 Nm, paired with a 7-speed DSG and front-wheel drive.
Official WLTC fuel economy is 17.0 km/l, equivalent to about 5.9 l/100 km, while luggage capacity is 455 liters. Volkswagen has taken a different route in another market: the Brazilian T-Cross 2027 received a new 8-speed automatic transmission, while the Japanese version keeps the DSG.
The lower price comes mainly from simpler equipment. The Essential replaces dual-zone automatic climate control with a conventional air conditioner. Key driver-assistance systems remain, including adaptive cruise control ACC, Lane Assist and Travel Assist.
Some option packages available for the regular Active are not offered on the Essential. These include Side Assist Plus, Park Assist, Rear Traffic Alert and the upgraded Discover Pro infotainment system. The only exterior color is Pure White.
The pricing experiment is therefore quite focused: Volkswagen kept the powertrain and major driver-assistance systems, while concentrating the savings on comfort, personalization and optional equipment.
For buyers outside Japan, the model has limited practical relevance because it is right-hand drive and the entire run is capped at 200 units. The Japanese list price should not be treated as an import price elsewhere, since shipping, taxes, registration and other costs can substantially change the final amount.
