France bans older Opel models over Takata airbag defect; Stellantis recalls 46,370 vehicles
France has prohibited the use of several older Opel models because of dangerous Takata airbags. Stellantis, the brand’s parent company, announced a recall campaign for 46,370 vehicles built from 2002 to 2018. The issue involves a potential defect in the gas inflators that could cause the airbag housing to rupture when deployed — a firm step toward putting safety first.
The action covers Opel Astra, Vectra, Zafira, Meriva, Mokka, Signum and Cascada. Owners will be notified and urged to visit dealerships without delay for a free replacement. According to Stellantis, the necessary parts are already in stock, and the swap should be quick — another reason not to postpone the visit.
The development is drawing attention in Italy as well, where the consumer association "Codici" is preparing a class action. Experts note the measures are preventative, yet ignoring the notice is risky. The Takata saga remains one of the largest recalls in the global auto industry, extending even to Chinese vehicles — a reminder of how long its consequences continue to reverberate.
