BYD SHARK in Europe: 436 hp, 90 km electric range and launch timing
BYD SHARK combines 436 hp, 90 km of WLTP electric range and 675 km total range. European sales expand over the next three months and into the first half of 2027.
BYD has clarified the European rollout of its SHARK plug-in hybrid pickup. Sales in selected markets are due to begin within the next three months, with expansion to more European countries planned for the first half of 2027. The timetable was confirmed during the Paris Motor Show on October 12. This was not the model's world premiere: SHARK made its European debut in the summer at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK.
SHARK is a body-on-frame double-cab pickup with all-wheel drive. Its DMO, or Dual Mode Off-road, hybrid system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors. Combined output is 436 hp and torque is 650 Nm. The pickup accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.
The key feature of the powertrain is the ability to cover everyday journeys mainly on electricity. A 32.2 kWh Blade Battery provides up to 90 km of WLTP electric range, while total range with a full tank and charged battery reaches 675 km. DC charging at up to 55 kW is supported, with a 30–80% charge taking 21 minutes.
There is an important detail in the official European figures. The quoted 3.5 l/100 km is the weighted WLTP fuel-consumption figure, which includes electric driving. With the battery at a low state of charge, consumption is rated at 9.6 l/100 km. SHARK's real-world efficiency therefore depends heavily on regular charging.
For traditional pickup duties, BYD gives up some capacity to one of its main rivals. SHARK can tow up to 2,500 kg and carry a payload of up to 790 kg. The Ford Ranger PHEV is rated to tow 3,500 kg and carry up to 1,000 kg. BYD counters with substantially more power and roughly twice the electric driving range.
For work use, SHARK offers a V2L function rated at up to 6 kW and two power outlets for tools and other equipment. The load bed has a stated volume of 1,200 litres.
BYD has not yet announced SHARK pricing for most European markets. Upcoming price lists and trim details will show how competitive the plug-in hybrid is against the Ford Ranger PHEV and other pickups, while the staged launch means market-specific availability still needs to be confirmed country by country.
