Next-generation Toyota Corolla: four-domain electronics and planned powertrains
The next Toyota Corolla may use four functional electronic domains to accommodate petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric variants. Launch timing is unconfirmed.
Instead of concentrating as many vehicle functions as possible in a handful of powerful computers, Toyota plans to keep its electronics divided by purpose. According to Japan’s Nikkei Cross Tech, the next-generation Corolla will adopt an electrical and electronic architecture built around four functional domains. Toyota has not disclosed how many physical electronic control units it will use.
The design separates driver-assistance functions, cabin equipment, body electronics and vehicle-motion control. Tesla has pursued a more centralized computing architecture, while Toyota intends to retain functional separation. This approach could make it easier to adapt the electronics to different powertrains and trim levels. There is no evidence yet of how it would affect production costs, wiring weight or repair bills.
The idea of a Corolla with several powertrain types is not new. Toyota unveiled the Corolla Concept in 2025 and outlined plans for a shared vehicle platform accommodating petrol, conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric variants. The proposed electronic architecture is intended to offer flexibility across those configurations.
Four potential powertrain types do not mean every country will receive all four. Market differences are already apparent: the 2026 US Corolla offers a 2.0-liter petrol engine or a 1.8-liter hybrid, with all-wheel drive available on the hybrid. European versions include 1.8- and 2.0-liter hybrids. The current Japanese Corolla sedan uses a 1.8-liter hybrid system and is available with E-Four all-wheel drive.
Automotive publications suggest the next Corolla generation could debut in 2027, with a US-market version arriving as a 2028 model. Toyota has not confirmed either date. Final powertrain specifications, battery details and the countries that will get an electric Corolla remain unknown.
