Mazda Australia backs Iconic SP with rotary power for production
Mazda is once again fueling hopes of a rotary-powered comeback. After discontinuing the RX-8 in 2012, the company briefly revived the iconic engine in the MX-30 as a range extender, but the experiment was short-lived. Now, attention has shifted to the Iconic SP concept, first unveiled at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, and executives are increasingly optimistic about its production potential.
Mazda Australia’s managing director, Vinesh Bhindi, said that if the corporation decides to greenlight the project, his team would gladly welcome the Iconic SP to showrooms. Unlike the MX-30, which had limited market appeal, a rotary-powered sports car would make a much stronger business case.
The Iconic SP upgrades Mazda’s rotary technology with a two-rotor engine capable of running on alternative fuels, including hydrogen. With a claimed output of 272 kW, it serves as a generator in a hybrid setup rather than driving the wheels directly.
Mazda has stated that rotary engine development remains a top priority, with ongoing work to ensure emissions compliance. While the production Iconic SP may not revive the RX badge, it is widely expected to evolve into the next-generation MX-5. For enthusiasts, that means a rotary range-extender sports car could soon become reality.
