Volkswagen Amarok to remain gasoline and diesel only; EV and PHEV off the table until the next generation

It has emerged that diesel and gasoline engines will remain the only powertrain options for the pickup Volkswagen Amarok until the next generation arrives. The electric Volkswagen Amarok that had been under consideration is now off the table. The German automaker also confirmed it will not follow its partner Ford by offering a plug-in hybrid for the current Volkswagen Amarok. The move feels cautious, keeping the truck anchored to proven hardware rather than experimental tech.

Fresh variants are now expected to appear only with the next-generation Amarok, whose future sits at a crossroads: continue the collaboration with Ford or pivot to a self-developed pickup on a Volkswagen platform. Whichever route they choose will shape the model’s character and how convincingly it holds its ground in the segment.
