Ford recalls all European Mustang Mach-E models over door mechanism risk
Ford has announced a sweeping recall of every Mustang Mach-E electric crossover sold in Europe and built between February 2020 and June 2025. The service campaign covers more than 320,000 vehicles, including 2,354 delivered to Spain.
The issue is the door mechanism. Unlike most cars, the Mach-E has no conventional handles or locks; the doors open via a button on the B-pillar. If the 12-volt auxiliary battery is depleted, the doors cannot be unlocked from outside or inside, posing a potential safety risk.
To address the problem, Ford is rolling out a software update for two modules—the engine-control module (PCM) and the diagnostics module (SOBDMC). The procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes, is performed free of charge at authorized service centers, and owners have been notified and invited to book an appointment.
While the defect might seem minor, experts point to it as an example of how the push for futuristic design can lead to awkward consequences. Releasing a car whose doors stop opening when a basic 12-volt battery runs down is, frankly, an engineering misstep. Ford says the update will fully eliminate this risk. It also underscores a simple truth: design flourishes should never come at the cost of basic usability.
