Australian car buyers are increasingly making conscious decisions to exclude specific brands from their consideration even during the initial online search phase. According to the Consumer Sentiment Survey by carsales, Tesla has once again topped the list of brands most frequently "filtered out" by users when choosing a vehicle.

The survey involved over 2,000 people. A significant 73% of respondents admitted to preemptively excluding at least one brand when shopping for a car. Tesla is the most commonly excluded, followed by Jaguar, Polestar, Peugeot, and Jeep. Other brands regularly filtered out include Ram, BYD, GWM, MG, and Porsche.

Buyers cite doubts about reliability and build quality as the primary reasons for rejecting a brand. Price and subjective perception of design also play substantial roles. In contrast, factors like maintenance costs, brand image, and country of origin proved to be less significant.

Interestingly, Jaguar showed the sharpest increase in negative sentiment—nearly 10% compared to the previous quarter. Analysts link this to recent changes in the brand's positioning. Among different age groups, millennials most frequently exclude Jaguar, while baby boomers most often rule out Tesla. However, the proportion of Generation Z excluding Tesla is notably lower.

Regarding the technical "exclude brand" search function, Tesla also remains the leader, with 63% of users having removed it from search results at least once. MG, GWM, and BYD follow.

Analysts emphasize that excluding a brand in a search does not always signify a final decision against purchase. Sometimes, buyers are simply filtering out brands they have already researched. Nevertheless, the trend indicates persistent skepticism toward a range of automakers, encompassing both premium and mass-market brands.
