While most automakers are focused on battery electric vehicles, Changan is taking an alternative path. The Deepal brand has announced the commercialization of its hydrogen fuel cell system, already used in the SL03 model.

The key achievement is an efficiency increase of more than 10% compared to industry standards. The hydrogen car can travel over 700 km in the CLTC cycle and refuels significantly faster than classic electric cars. This is one of the rare cases where a Chinese manufacturer is implementing hydrogen technology specifically in passenger cars.

Until now, such solutions have been more common in commercial transport—trucks and buses—where infrastructure is easier to organize. Changan is already working on the second generation of the system, with the main focus on reducing cost, the key barrier to mass adoption of hydrogen vehicles. This applies not only to the fuel cells themselves but also to hydrogen storage systems, which remain expensive.

According to the company's plans, a new generation of hydrogen passenger car will appear in 2027, becoming more affordable and technologically advanced. Hydrogen is viewed not as a replacement for electric vehicles but as a complement to them.

Today, hydrogen transport remains a niche segment. In China, there are about 30,000 such vehicles, most of them commercial. However, gradual cost reduction and government support could change the situation in the coming years.

Hydrogen is not a competitor to electric vehicles but their potential ally. If Changan succeeds in lowering the cost of the technology, the market could gain an alternative that is particularly interesting for long-distance travel. But without infrastructure, even the most advanced solutions will remain niche.
