NIU’s NIUMM L6e electric microcar nears certification and production

Chinese company NIU, known for its urban electric scooters, is moving a compact electric car called NIUMM toward series production. The model premiered at EICMA 2025 in Milan and comes across as a natural continuation of the brand’s successful scooter line.

NIUMM falls under the L6e category—light four-wheel vehicles capped at 45 km/h and weighing up to 425 kg. It uses the same battery packs as the NQi scooter range and can cover about 70 km on a single charge. A second pair of batteries can be installed to almost double that range. The modular setup keeps the idea straightforward and city-friendly.

NIU has confirmed the model is finishing certification, after which commercial production will begin. Company representative Zighart Michelsen said the project had cleared all key testing stages and was ready to move forward. The tone suggests the rollout plan is already well shaped.

L6e microcars are gaining traction in Europe thanks to approachable pricing and the option to drive them with a moped license. The Citroën Ami, Renault Twizy and Microlino have already proved that simple, light and efficient city cars can find an audience. NIUMM aims to join that group with NIU’s recognizable design, modular batteries and minimal running costs, with sales expected to start in 2026. The package looks tailored to everyday urban routines.
