Ford recalls 858,000 vehicles over fuel injector defect

Ford has announced one of the largest recalls in recent years, with nearly 858,000 vehicles equipped with the 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine requiring unscheduled inspections due to a potential fuel leak and fire risk. This campaign affects popular models including the Kuga, Bronco, and Escape, produced between 2018 and 2024. The issue has been noted not only by dealers but also by European regulators, with the recall being overseen by Germany's KBA.

Recall Cause: Injector Defect and High Fire Risk

According to regulatory documents reviewed by SPEEDME, the recall stems from a risk of cracks forming in the high-pressure fuel injector. If the component loses its seal, gasoline can seep onto the top of the engine. In close proximity to the hot exhaust system, this creates a critical risk of fire. This combination of factors has prompted Ford to launch a global service campaign.

Scope of the Problem

The recall covers vehicles manufactured from November 2018 through the end of May 2024. Affected models include:

• Ford Kuga – the largest share in Europe;
• Ford Bronco – a popular global SUV;
• Ford Escape – a related model for the U.S. and several other regions.

KBA data indicates 19,228 vehicles in Germany are subject to inspection. Globally, the recall encompasses 857,794 units.

Ford's Response

Ford has not yet released a final list of technical actions. However, service is expected to involve replacing the faulty component or modifying the fuel system to reduce the risk of recurrence.
