Subaru's new large electric SUV with three rows launching in 2026
Subaru has officially confirmed the launch of its largest electric vehicle—a three-row SUV set to hit the market by the end of 2026. This will become the brand's fourth EV model, following the Solterra, Trailseeker, and compact Uncharted. The company is rapidly closing gaps in its electric strategy, even as global EV demand shows signs of cooling.
According to media reports, the new three-row SUV may share platform solutions with the upcoming Toyota Highlander EV. This move makes sense, given that Subaru and Toyota already collaborate on electric models like the Solterra and the new Trailseeker. All-wheel drive is practically guaranteed—a key part of Subaru's DNA—and a dual-motor setup suits a large family electric crossover.
The model aims to address the weaknesses of the gasoline-powered Ascent, which has struggled in the segment due to a cramped third row and a noisy powertrain. The electric version should offer more space, quieter operation, and smoother torque delivery—critical features for a family vehicle.
This large EV arrives amid declining sales in the three-row electric SUV segment. Both the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9 have seen demand drop compared to 2025. Nonetheless, Subaru is targeting households with two cars and home charging. Company leadership believes this group will help it approach a record U.S. market share of 4.2% in 2026.
For a brand that has lagged behind key competitors in electrification for years, this new model represents a significant step. Subaru is now preparing a vehicle that can compete with segment leaders and attract families in need of a spacious, functional electric SUV.
