New Volkswagen 2027 Atlas: first look and details
Volkswagen has unveiled the first official image of the new 2027 Atlas, a three-row crossover set to replace the 2017 model and strengthen the brand's position in one of the most competitive segments. Despite the bold camouflage, the vehicle shows a redesigned exterior: only the roof remains unchanged, while the body panels, lighting, and bumpers are all new. The profile stays recognizable—it retains the same large, practical silhouette aimed at family buyers.
The new Atlas is built on the MQB Evo platform and will feature the EA888 Evo5 gasoline engine. In the Tiguan, this engine produces 268 horsepower and 258 Nm of torque, but for the heavier Atlas, these figures might be increased. There will be no hybrid version at launch, a decision that looks questionable since most competitors—like the Telluride, Palisade, and Toyota Highlander—are already betting on electrification.
The interior has been completely redesigned, with VW promising to ditch the inconvenient touch-sensitive buttons that faced criticism in the previous generation. The model's dimensions, including the wheelbase, are nearly unchanged, indicating the seven-seat layout will remain.
For Volkswagen, the Atlas remains a key model: over 71,000 units were sold in 2025, just slightly fewer than the Tiguan. Against this backdrop of declining sales and strong competition, the update becomes essential. The global debut will take place at the New York Auto Show in April, with sales starting by the end of summer.
