Mercedes G-Class convertible custom build by Expedition Motor Company

The classic Mercedes-Benz G-Class has once again been offered as a convertible, but this time it's not from the factory. Instead, a tuning atelier has brought a rare G-Wagen cabriolet to market, priced higher than many new cars for 2026.

Custom Build Replaces Factory Version

Since Mercedes ended production of the G-Class cabriolet in 2013, independent workshops have filled the niche. One such project comes from the U.S.-based Expedition Motor Company.

The vehicle is built on the classic G-Class platform, featuring an extended wheelbase, a removable soft top, and a distinctive off-road aesthetic. Iconic design elements are preserved, including the external door hinges, rear-mounted spare tire, and the model's classic body geometry.

Technical Specs and Engine Options

Under the hood, buyers can opt for a diesel engine producing up to 275 horsepower. For an additional cost, a 430-horsepower V8 LS3 is also available. All versions come equipped with all-wheel drive, locking differentials, and a reinforced suspension system.

Pricing and Market Position

This custom G-Class commands a price of $252,850, putting it in the same range as a new Mercedes G63. The cost reflects a bespoke build with extensive handcrafted elements and broad personalization options.

The story of the G-Class cabriolet illustrates that classic vehicles don't disappear from the market; they simply evolve. While manufacturers focus on electric vehicles, demand for unique gasoline-powered SUVs continues to rise.
