Smart #2 electric microcar: compact EV with 30 kWh battery for city driving

Smart is preparing to return to its historic format of urban microcars. The new Smart #2 has already been spotted during road tests in China, with its official debut scheduled for April 24, 2026 at the Beijing Auto Show. This model will become the brand's most compact vehicle in recent years and should strengthen Smart's position in the world's largest electric vehicle market.

The Smart #2 adopts the style of the classic second-generation ForTwo, highlighting a strategic shift for the brand. It features short overhangs, a compact hood, distinctive round headlights, and a contrasting roof.

Despite its small dimensions, the car appears more substantial thanks to wide wheel arches and large mirrors. Based on test prototypes, the charging port appears to be located in the front fender.

The new model is built on the ECA platform, developed jointly with Geely, while Mercedes-Benz's team handled the design. It will feature a single electric motor on the rear axle and a battery with a capacity of around 30 kWh. The car's length will be approximately 2.7 meters, with a wheelbase of 1.9 meters. This makes the Smart #2 a typical urban electric vehicle focused on maneuverability and efficiency.

In recent years, Smart has been increasing the size of its models and moving into more premium segments. However, sales in China remain modest—just 2,974 vehicles were sold in January-February 2026.

Returning to a compact format should attract a new audience and intensify competition in the affordable electric vehicle segment, where Chinese brands already dominate.
