Xiaomi accelerates EV expansion into Europe with Tesla hires

Xiaomi may accelerate its entry into the European market, potentially starting deliveries of its electric vehicles in 2026 instead of the previously announced 2027. The company is actively strengthening its team by recruiting top executives from Tesla, including logistics head Dieter Lorenz. This move is significant as the brand transitions from local success to global expansion, preparing for competition in Europe.

Accelerating Strategy and Team Strengthening

Following a successful 2025 and sales growth, Xiaomi has decided to speed up its international expansion. The company is not only expanding its model lineup but also building European infrastructure, including logistics and sales. A key step has been hiring specialists with Tesla experience, which should help mitigate risks when entering new markets.

One such appointment is Dieter Lorenz, who previously handled delivery processes at Tesla. He will oversee logistics and supply in Europe, a critical element for large-scale sales. Xiaomi has also previously recruited managers from Tesla China to bolster its commercial operations.

Model Lineup and Technical Foundation

Currently, Xiaomi offers two key models—the SU7 sedan and the YU7 crossover, both showing strong demand in China. The updated SU7 garnered over 40,000 orders in a short period, confirming market interest. The lineup will expand further with new models, including the more affordable SU5 and the larger YU9 SUV.

Technically, the vehicles target the electric car segment with high power and range. For example, certain YU7 versions may offer over 1,000 horsepower and up to 705 km of autonomy. Additionally, Xiaomi is considering implementing extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) hybrid solutions to appeal to a broader audience.
