Mercedes-AMG M179: the hybrid flat-plane V8 is back

Mercedes-AMG has officially confirmed development of a new-generation V8, internally coded M179. After the C63’s shift to a four-cylinder hybrid stirred backlash and cost the brand some loyalists, this engine is poised to bring the marque back to its roots—combining its trademark sound and punch with today’s emissions demands.

Early information suggests the unit will keep its 4.0-liter displacement and twin turbos, while adopting a flat-plane crank and a hybrid system. This setup should raise the rev ceiling, cut emissions, and meet Euro 7. A special exhaust layout described in a Mercedes patent is intended to recreate the characterful voice of a classic V8, preserving what fans value most—sound and emotion.

AMG boss Michael Schiebe notes steady demand for these new powertrains, particularly in the U.S. The first models tipped to receive the M179 include the Mercedes-AMG CLE 63, along with updated S 63, GT 63, and the legendary G 63. Output is expected to exceed 720 hp, edging the carmaker toward the realm of the world’s top sports cars.

For Mercedes, the move may seem paradoxical: the company is pushing hard on electrification, yet it acknowledges that its portrait isn’t complete without a genuine V8.
