Rivian starts production of the new R2 electric crossover
Rivian has officially started production of the new R2 electric crossover, a model set to become central to the brand’s future. Deliveries will begin in spring 2026, with a starting price of $57,990 that is expected to drop to $45,000 by 2027.
R2 marks Rivian’s first real move beyond the premium segment long defined by the R1 lineup. The new electric crossover is aimed directly at the Tesla Model Y and is expected to support sales growth as EV demand in the US softens following the end of incentives.
The company expects to deliver around 22,000 to 23,000 R2 vehicles in 2026, assuming steady demand and successful production ramp-up.
At launch, the range opens with the Launch Edition priced at $57,990. A more affordable Premium trim at $53,990 will follow later in 2026, while the entry-level rear-wheel-drive version priced at $48,490 is due in the first half of 2027. The most affordable version, at $45,000, is expected by the end of 2027.
The lower pricing comes from major engineering simplification: large cast components cut costs by 32%, the new powertrain by 25%, and the simplified suspension by as much as 72%.
R2 is set to become a cornerstone of Rivian’s strategy. While the model is likely to weigh on margins at launch, by 2027 it is expected to materially improve the company’s financial performance through higher production volumes.
The model also serves as a technology platform. Rivian is already developing a $2,500 driver-assistance system and has signed a partnership with Uber worth up to $1.25 billion to develop robotaxis based on the R2.
