Smart Concept #2 brings the brand back to the city car idea

At the Beijing motor show, SPEEDME journalists filmed the Smart Concept #2 live — a compact two-seat electric car that brings the brand back to the idea behind the iconic Fortwo. After several years in the crossover segment, Smart is again showing an urban model: the production version is expected in 2026, with a stated range target of up to 300 km.

The Smart Concept #2 looks like a modern interpretation of the classic city car. It has a short body, a two-seat cabin, rounded lighting, smooth body panels and unusual transparent wheel discs. In person, the prototype feels more like a design object, but according to our journalists, its appearance is about 90% close to the production car.

After coming under the control of Geely and Mercedes-Benz, the brand focused on the #1, #3 and #5 crossovers. The Concept #2 shifts that emphasis: Smart is trying to win back the audience that remembers it precisely as a small urban car. The new model is built on the new ECA electric architecture, and its range should be roughly twice that of the old electric Fortwo.

As SPEEDME experts previously wrote, the premiere of the production Smart #2 is expected in October 2026 in Paris. Production is planned for Ningbo, China, where the brand’s modern models are already built. For Europe, such a car could be a more logical product than large SUVs: compact dimensions, electric drive and a familiar format suit urban use well.
