The first electric GTI is here: Volkswagen makes the ID. Polo fast and almost nostalgic
Volkswagen unveils the ID. Polo GTI — its first electric hot hatch with 226 hp, 290 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 6.8 s and a 52 kWh NMC battery. Price around €40,000.
Volkswagen has officially revealed the ID. Polo GTI — the brand’s first electric car to wear the legendary three letters. For Volkswagen it is a meaningful moment: the badge is already 50 years old, and now it crosses from the world of petrol hot hatches into the electric era.
In terms of size, the ID. Polo GTI remains a city hatchback: 4097 mm long, 1816 mm wide, 1515 mm tall, with a 2599 mm wheelbase. The boot holds between 441 and 1243 litres. On the outside, the GTI version is set apart by a red stripe across the nose, a light bar between the Matrix LED headlights, vertical daytime running lights, an honeycomb-style grille, 19-inch wheels and glossy black trim at the rear.
Inside, Volkswagen has not abandoned the classic GTI cues. There is black-and-red trim, a sports steering wheel with a red marker at 12 o’clock, seats with the chequered fabric that nods to the original GTIs, and a dedicated GTI mode button. The instrument cluster measures 10.25 inches, the infotainment screen 12.9 inches. Available options include a 425 W Harman Kardon system with 10 speakers, a panoramic roof, front-seat massage, Travel Assist, the adaptive DCC chassis, Launch Control and 30-colour ambient lighting.
The ID. Polo GTI is front-wheel drive. The electric motor sits at the front and delivers 226 hp and 290 Nm. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 6.8 seconds and top speed is 175 km/h. The car comes with progressive steering, disc brakes front and rear, adaptive suspension and the electronic front-axle limited-slip differential familiar from the Golf GTI.
The NMC battery has a usable capacity of 52 kWh. WLTP range is up to 424 km. Peak charging power is 105 kW, so a 10-to-80 % top-up takes 24 minutes.
The price has not yet been announced, but in Europe the entry point is expected to land at around €40,000 — roughly $47,200. Orders open in mid-October, with the first cars due at dealerships before the end of the year. The ID. Polo GTI will be built in Spain.
The real question isn’t whether it is fast. For a 226-horsepower city EV, 6.8 seconds to 100 km/h is plenty. The intrigue lies elsewhere: will GTI fans accept that the thrill can survive without the sound of a petrol engine. Volkswagen has kept the tartan on the seats, the red accents and the front-wheel drive — now it has to prove that this is enough.
