AMG hits Porsche where it hurts: the new GT EV costs less but goes faster than the Taycan Turbo
AMG has priced its first standalone EV. In Germany the GT 4-Door EV is cheaper than the Taycan Turbo yet wins on power, acceleration, range and charging speed.
Mercedes-AMG has announced prices for its first standalone electric car — the GT 4-Door EV. In Germany it turned out cheaper than the Porsche Taycan Turbo, even though it beats the Porsche on almost every key figure: power, acceleration, range and charging speed.
The new AMG is built on the AMG.EA platform and comes in two versions. The GT 55 develops 816 hp and accelerates to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds. The GT 63 already puts out 1,169 hp and reaches the first «hundred» in 2.1 seconds. Top speed for both variants is 300 km/h. For comparison, the Porsche Taycan Turbo hits 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds, the Turbo S in 2.4 seconds, and the Turbo GT in 2.3 seconds.
The AMG powertrain consists of three axial-flux electric motors: one at the front, two at the rear. They are supplied by YASA. Mercedes-AMG has already built in a power reserve: the system is designed for more than 1,360 hp, so even angrier versions of the model could appear.
The 106 kWh battery received 2,660 cylindrical cells with an NCMA cathode and a silicon anode. Range is 690 km WLTP for the GT 55 and 686 km for the GT 63. That is higher than the Taycan Turbo GT with 559 km, and slightly better than the regular Taycan with 680 km. The Ferrari Luce, which also landed in the same wave of discussion, is rated at 530 km.
Charging is one of the heaviest blows against Porsche. The 800-volt architecture allows it to accept up to 600 kW of direct current. The battery charges from 10 to 80% in 11 minutes, and in 10 minutes you can recover up to 460 km of WLTP range. For an expensive electric grand tourer, that is no longer just a pretty number but a way to remove the main fear of long journeys.
The price in Germany starts at 154,700 euros for the AMG GT 55 (roughly $167,100). The AMG GT 63 costs from 196,350 euros (around $212,100). The Porsche Taycan Turbo is priced there at 177,200 euros, or about $191,400, the Turbo S at 211,000 euros (roughly $227,900), and the Turbo GT at 241,100 euros (around $260,400).
The result is a rare situation: Mercedes-AMG arrived later but immediately struck the Taycan's sorest spot — the ratio of price to specs. The design of the GT 4-Door EV is already being debated on social media, but its numbers are such that Porsche will have to respond not with comments, but with new hardware.
