Diesel just heard the door close behind it: Volvo's electric long-hauler is here

Volvo Trucks unveils the FH Aero Electric with extended range — new e-axle, eight batteries, MCS megawatt charging from 20 to 80 percent in roughly 50 minutes.

Volvo Trucks has rolled out an electric tractor that finally makes diesel say, “well, here we are.” The new FH Aero Electric with extended range covers up to 700 km on a single charge — for a heavy hauler, that is no longer a niche toy but a serious bid for real long-haul work.

The big change is the new e-axle. Two motors and the transmission are packed into the rear axle itself, freeing up space in the frame for eight batteries. That is how Volvo stretched the range without crushing the payload, while the aerodynamic FH Aero cab keeps energy use down on the highway.

The second key piece is MCS charging. The tractor can be topped up from 20 to 80% in roughly 50 minutes. For a passenger EV that would be slow, but the maths is different for a truck: the pause fits within the driver’s mandatory rest, so the vehicle does not fall out of schedule.

Volvo is also updating the heavy electric FH, FM and FMX: those are quoted at up to 470 km. But the FH Aero Electric is the headline signal to the market. Wherever a powerful charger sits on the route, the operator gets quieter operation, fewer local emissions and less dependence on diesel.
