Mercedes-AMG CLA electric 2026: debut date, power, range and price context

Mercedes-AMG is preparing to unveil the new CLA, and the interest here goes beyond just another hot compact sedan. A teaser with the tagline “born for the thrill seeker” points to a July 9 debut, and the model itself could become the first new-generation AMG CLA with a fully electric powertrain producing around 500 hp.
If the forecast holds up, Mercedes will effectively rewrite the meaning of its entry-level AMG. The regular new CLA has already moved to an 800-volt architecture, gained fast charging of up to 320 kW and a WLTP range of up to 483 miles on the brand’s UK site — that’s roughly 777 km. For AMG the key point is different: the platform allows all-wheel drive, instant torque and stiffer tuning without the classic chase for engine displacement.
The AMG version is expected to use axial-flux electric motors, close in philosophy to the tech in the larger electric AMGs. There is also talk of a possible synthesized soundscape, including a V8-style option, so the car doesn’t come across as fast but sterile. This is now a battle not only with BMW M and Audi S/RS, but also with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, where synthetic sound and simulated shifts have become part of the character.
Against the current AMG CLA 35 with 302 hp and a starting price of $56,100, the electric AMG CLA looks like a serious leap in power. Even the CLA 45 S Final Edition with 416 hp formally falls short of the expected electric version, although the combustion car keeps its own argument — a familiar feel, real sound and the mechanical logic that AMG fans understand.
The July 9 premiere will show whether the AMG CLA has become a genuine electric alternative to the CLA 45 or, for now, just an expensive showcase of Mercedes’ new platform.
