Ford Fathom 2027: Price, Range and Battery Options Explained
Ford confirms the Fathom electric pickup will offer two battery options — a base pack and an extended-range version good for “300-something miles.”
A price under $30,000 and a range beyond 300 miles apparently won’t come in the same Ford Fathom configuration. Alan Clarke, Ford’s vice president of advanced development, confirmed the electric pickup will get two batteries: the larger one should deliver “300-something miles,” while the base version likely won’t get there.
That’s an important clarification. When Ford revealed the Fathom’s name and price, the company only mentioned a standard and an extended battery. The entry-level truck starts at $28,350 before destination, or $29,945 with the mandatory fee. Ford hasn’t yet specified exact battery capacity or an EPA-certified range.
Why is Ford fixated on the 300-mile mark at all? According to Clarke, buyers care about the psychological reassurance that a vehicle can cross that threshold, even if they rarely use the full range day to day. So the long-range battery essentially becomes a way to remove “range anxiety,” while the cheaper Fathom stays a tool for keeping the advertised price under $30,000.
Ford isn’t chasing range through battery size alone. The automaker says the new pickup’s aerodynamic efficiency is more than 15% better than other trucks, and specific body design choices add dozens of extra kilometers without a bigger battery. Ford has previously detailed the project’s aerodynamics.
The project itself is edging closer to production: after retooling the Louisville plant, prototype assembly using production-intent components is planned to start in the first quarter of 2027, with customer vehicles following later that year.
That leaves the Fathom playing two different roles. The $29,945 version needs to prove that a new electric pickup can actually get close in price to the gas-powered Maverick. The extended-battery variant has to clear a different hurdle — the one where a buyer wants to see a range number on the dash that starts with a “3.”
