Chevrolet electric sedan: what is known about the unannounced GM-Wuling project
Official GM photos from China show a covered three-box car that GM Authority believes could be a future electrified Chevrolet sedan. GM has only confirmed a compact electric hatchback so far.
Official photos from a meeting between GM South America and SAIC-GM-Wuling in China revealed a vehicle that General Motors did not mention in its own statement. Under the cover is a car with a pronounced three-box silhouette, and GM Authority believes it could be a future electrified Chevrolet sedan.
The distinction is important. On August 31, GM South America chief Thomas Owsianski confirmed only a new compact electric Chevrolet hatchback for South America; the company is also studying the possibility of producing it in Brazil. A separate sedan, its name, powertrain and target market have not been officially announced.
If the assumption is correct, Chevrolet’s cooperation with SGMW is extending beyond the already familiar formula of crossovers and compact EVs. One of the next projects has been linked to an electric hatchback for which the return of the Chevrolet Joy name and a Wuling Bingo Pro basis had previously been discussed. Another example of Chinese technical underpinnings is the next gasoline-powered Captiva, which has been linked to the Wuling Starlight 560.
GM Authority notes that the covered car does not appear to match either the current Wuling Starlight or the Baojun Xiang Jing in its proportions. However, a silhouette alone is not enough to identify the platform or the eventual production model, so it is too early to call it an entirely new development.
For now, what is confirmed is GM’s cooperation with SGMW and the electric hatchback project. The sedan remains a second possible project that happened to appear in an official image. The next meaningful confirmation will not be another photo, but the model name, launch market and powertrain details.
