Volkswagen Tera 2027: 200 TSI engine, 8-speed automatic and 200 Nm
Brazil's Volkswagen Tera 2027 gains a stronger 200 TSI engine and an eight-speed automatic in Comfort and High trims, with torque rising to 200 Nm.
Volkswagen has significantly upgraded the Tera without a facelift. In Brazil, the 2027 Comfort and High versions will replace the 170 TSI with a 6-speed automatic with a 1.0-liter 200 TSI and a new 8-speed transmission. Output on ethanol rises from 116 to 128 hp, while torque increases from 165 to 200 Nm, or by roughly 21%.
On gasoline, the new engine produces 116 hp versus the current 109 hp. Volkswagen confirmed the changes to journalists at the Rock in Rio event, and the cars are expected to reach Brazilian dealers in October. Prices for the 2027 range and official fuel-consumption figures have not yet been announced.
Volkswagen's own website still lists the previous 170 TSI for the Tera Comfort and High, rated at 116 hp and 165 Nm with an automatic transmission. In other words, the announced 2027-model-year hardware has not yet reached the brand's online configurator.
The bigger change is not the extra 12 hp but the torque. The jump from 165 to 200 Nm should be more noticeable when pulling away and overtaking. On the related 2027 Volkswagen T-Cross with the 200 TSI and 8-speed automatic, Volkswagen has claimed up to a 7% reduction in urban fuel consumption on gasoline and up to 5% on ethanol. Those figures cannot be transferred directly to the Tera because its own results have not yet been published.
The manual Tera 170 TSI will remain in the range, while the more powerful combination is reserved for Comfort and High. The current versions cost 133,190 and 146,190 reais respectively. The least expensive Tera is priced at 107,190 reais.
For the Tera family, this is already the second major development in a matter of days: Volkswagen is also preparing production of the related Tengo model in South Africa. Assembly at the Kariega plant is due to begin in 2027. The next real checkpoint, however, is Brazil's October price list, which will show how much Volkswagen charges for the extra 35 Nm and two additional gears.
