Tesla has added compatible Model 3 and Model Y vehicles to Powershare Home Backup. With Powerwall 3, output reaches 11.52 kW, while China gets a separate 2.2 kW V2L function.

11.52 kW instead of the 2.4 kW available from the external Outlet Adapter — that is the next step in turning Tesla Model 3 and Model Y into mobile energy storage. Tesla has officially added compatible versions of its mass-market cars to Powershare Home Backup: during a grid outage, the traction battery can keep a home supplied with electricity.

For Model 3 and Model Y, the setup currently requires Powerwall 3 plus either a Universal Wall Connector or Wall Connector Gen 3. Maximum continuous output is 11.52 kW. Tesla estimates that Standard versions can add up to two days of backup power, while Premium and Performance versions can provide more than two days. The estimate assumes a home using 30 kWh per day and a vehicle charged to 90%.

Guaranteed hardware compatibility applies to Model 3 and Model Y ordered in the United States and Puerto Rico after October 1, 2026. Some earlier vehicles also support the feature, but owners need to check Additional Vehicle Information for the Powershare Support entry. Both models require software version 2026.32.6 or later and Tesla app version 4.60.0 or newer.

The scale of the change is clearer next to the 2.4 kW Outlet Adapter. That adapter turns the charging port of a compatible vehicle into a power source for individual devices, but it is not designed to feed a home electrical panel. Powershare Home Backup delivers 4.8 times more power and is a full home-backup system.

A similar external-power feature arrived on Chinese Model 3 and Model Y on October 1, but there the output is up to 2.2 kW AC through an external adapter. It is intended for individual loads and is not equivalent to a home V2H system. The US Powershare Home Backup is technically more complex and, for now, remains a regional solution closely tied to the Powerwall ecosystem.
