Italy’s regulator ends probes into Stellantis, Volkswagen, Tesla and BYD with no fines. Carmakers will clarify EV range, battery degradation and warranty terms.

Italy has wrapped up investigations into Stellantis, Volkswagen, Tesla, and BYD that began in February over suspected unfair practices in how they inform buyers about electric vehicles. Regulators zeroed in on practical pain points for the market: stated driving range, how battery capacity degrades over time, and the limits of battery warranty coverage. In short, the very things that shape ownership costs and set expectations at the moment of purchase.

Following the review, the authority closed the cases after accepting the companies’ commitments and chose not to impose financial penalties. Instead of fines, the carmakers agreed to overhaul their websites so consumer information is presented clearly and without ambiguity. It was also stated that the brands will introduce a range-modeling tool to help shoppers compare cars within the same segment, while Stellantis, BYD, and Volkswagen are expected to make additional enhancements to battery degradation warranty terms. A tool like that is a sensible addition for buyers who weigh options class by class.

It matters that Italian law allows substantial fines for consumer protection breaches, yet this time the regulator opted to fix and clarify rather than punish. The approach looks pragmatic: plain, consistent disclosures on range, degradation, and warranty scope are exactly what help customers make grounded choices in a still-evolving EV landscape.
