French premium brand DS has begun work on the next-generation DS 3, aiming to recapture the spirit of the 2010 original—the model that remains the marque’s most successful to date.

Design inspired by the roots

The current DS 3 is the oldest nameplate in the lineup, and its successor is set to be a radical rethink. The brand’s head of design points to the first DS 3 as the reference, highlighting sporty proportions, clean surfacing and a vivid personality. That focus feels like the right move for a car that built its reputation on character.

This isn’t about retro pastiche—familiar cues will be reframed through a modern lens. Among the expected details are square taillights with a 3D effect, a minimalist silhouette and a stronger emphasis on the light signature. Refocusing on stance and simplicity should restore the attitude that made the original stand out.

Technology and powertrains

The new DS 3 is likely to offer hybrid versions alongside a fully electric variant, in line with the brand’s electrification strategy. Inside, a major step forward is on the cards: a new infotainment architecture, digital displays and more advanced driver-assistance features. A leap like this would be timely, helping the car feel as progressive as it looks.

There is also a possibility that the model will stretch beyond its traditional segment, taking a more niche direction similar to strategies used by other premium players. For a compact with style-led appeal, a tighter focus can sharpen its identity.

What it means for the market

DS’s push to restore the DS 3’s cult status underscores the brand’s quest for individuality in Europe’s crowded premium space. Leaning on the aesthetic of the first model could tap into nostalgia, but the real test will be striking the right balance between contemporary technology and the marque’s signature elegance. If that equation works, the DS 3 can carve out a distinct role as a stylish urban premium car with a strong visual DNA.
