Porsche has radically overhauled its strategy for launching its new flagship, a seven-seat SUV codenamed K1. Originally planned as a fully electric model on the SSP platform, it will now become a technical twin of the Audi Q9, switching to the PPC architecture designed for internal combustion engines and hybrids. This move is linked to delays in SSP development, rising costs of electric projects, and declining Taycan sales, which have forced Porsche to adjust its electric strategy.

The K1 will mark Porsche's first entry into the large premium SUV segment, dominated by the BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS. It is expected to offer a wide range of configurations, from four to seven seats, allowing Porsche to compete in the big league of family luxury models. The K1 will be based on the same production and engineering solutions as the Audi Q9, which focuses on markets in the U.S., China, and the Middle East—key regions for Porsche as well.

The PPC platform supports modern V6 and V8 twin-turbo engines, along with a new generation of plug-in hybrids. The K1's engine lineup is anticipated to cover a power range comparable to the Cayenne, roughly from 350 to 730 horsepower. This approach gives Porsche a quick route to market without the need to complete the costly development of the SSP platform. An electric version of the K1 remains in the plans but will arrive much later.

Production of the K1 is scheduled for the Volkswagen Group plant in Bratislava, where the Cayenne EV and future Audi Q9 are already assembled. This will allow Porsche to optimize costs and scale up output. The model's debut is expected in 2028.

The K1 becomes a key element of Porsche's updated strategy: combining powerful internal combustion engines, hybrids, and a future electric version enables the company to maintain its premium segment presence while reducing development expenses.
