Smart has officially opened pre-orders for its first plug-in hybrid crossover, the Smart #5 EHD. The debut is set for September 28, with sales expected to begin as soon as October.

The model follows the brand’s current “time capsule” design language. A closed grille, distinctive lighting and chrome accents give it a modern, polished look, and the theme comes together cohesively rather than loudly. At the rear, there are full-width taillights and a reshaped bumper with gray decorative inserts.

The Smart #5 EHD measures 4,705 x 1,920 x 1,710 mm with a 2,900 mm wheelbase. Inside, an “embracing cockpit” layout uses a twin center console to free up extra storage. The dashboard hosts a 10.3-inch instrument cluster, two 13-inch AMOLED displays and a 25.6-inch AR head-up display, a screen-heavy setup that should make daily use feel decidedly upmarket.

The headline feature is a new powertrain centered on a 1.5-liter turbo engine (120 kW) as part of the EHD hybrid system (Thunder God Hybrid 2.0). The car can travel up to 252 km on electricity alone, with a total CLTC range of up to 1,615 km. Fuel consumption in depleted-battery mode is quoted at 4.4 L/100 km—figures that, on paper, point to serious long-distance efficiency.

Smart says fast charging will replenish the battery from 10 to 80% in under 20 minutes. Taken together—efficiency, cabin space and tech—the #5 EHD shapes up as a compelling new entry in China’s mid-size SUV segment.
