Small cars, grown-up protection: how MINI rebuilt safety across Cooper, Aceman and Countryman

MINI has reminded everyone that small cars stopped being just about bold design and a go-kart driving position a long while back. The brand's whole current lineup — Cooper, Aceman and Countryman — comes with a serious baseline of safety systems at no extra cost.

Standard equipment includes front collision warning with automatic braking, lane departure control with steering intervention, speed limit display and cruise control with a braking function. The Driving Assistant package adds blind-spot warning, exit warning when opening a door, rear collision warning and rear cross-traffic alert when reversing.

Two further tiers sit above that. Driving Assistant Plus is available for Cooper, Aceman and Countryman: it brings lane keeping, Adaptive Cruise Stop & Go and an automatic speed limit assistant. The top-tier Driving Assistant Professional has been kept for the Countryman only — it adds a Lane Change Assistant, Active Lane Guiding, side collision protection on motorways and traffic light recognition in town.

MINI singles out the Pre-Crash function. When the electronics sense that a situation is turning dangerous, the car closes the windows and sunroof in advance and adjusts the seat backrest positions. None of this replaces seatbelts or airbags, but it prepares the cabin before the moment of impact.

Passive safety has grown too. The Countryman in Germany ships with seven airbags, including a central airbag between the front seats. Cooper and Aceman add side airbags for the second row — up to nine in total. Almost every model now gets an active bonnet: in a pedestrian impact it rises slightly, creating extra deformation space.

Parking functions have widened as well. The baseline already covers a rear-view camera, a maneuvering assistant, a reversing assistant and active sensors. Parking Assistant Plus adds a 360-degree surround view, while remote parking from a smartphone comes with Parking Assistant Professional.

MINI is still selling emotion and style, but it now does so with a far more grown-up safety set. For a city car that matters: most risks don't happen on the motorway, they happen in dense traffic, in car parks and on short trips, where drivers tend to switch off.
