Toyota Land Cruiser 78 Troopcarrier camper kit: price, dimensions and what's included

A Toyota Land Cruiser 78 can be turned into a minimalist camper for about $3,600 without raising the roof. Australian builder Summit Vans priced its Troopcarrier Fitout #001 kit at 5,499 AUD. That's the cost of the furniture alone, though — the fridge, battery, water system and installation are not included.

The module is designed for the standard Land Cruiser 78 Troop Carrier. Along the left side sits an L-shaped bench with a large pull-out drawer that folds into a bed measuring 1,910x965 mm. The aisle stays narrow at 360 mm. Opposite it are a bamboo benchtop, a pull-out work desk and a fridge platform sized 850x435 mm. The cabinets are made of Hexa plywood, with Blum hardware throughout.

Buyers can get the flat-pack kit with instructions for 5,499 AUD, or pay extra for the kitchen drawer version at 5,999 AUD (about $3,900). An assembled module starts at 7,499 AUD — roughly $4,900 — while cabinet-only installation at the workshop in Wollongong, Australia starts from 8,499 AUD, about $5,600. Lead time is quoted at three to four weeks.

The camper shown in the video is fitted out well beyond the base kit. It carries a 45-litre Dometic fridge, a 210 Ah battery system with alternator charging, a 40-litre water tank, an ARB compressor, Bilstein B60 shocks and Polyair air springs. Those components add to the total cost and shouldn't be mistaken for part of the 5,499 AUD kit.

Living in one full time is a tight fit: there's no standing headroom inside, and the bed is really built for one person. On the plus side, the vehicle keeps its stock height and can still work as a regular off-roader between trips. For anyone outside Australia, importing the kit yourself is the only realistic path — Summit Vans only offers professional installation at its own workshop, so shipping alone could end up costing more than part of the kit itself.
