Subaru e-BOXER Discontinued 2026: Impreza and Crosstrek Order Deadline and S:HEV Replacement

Subaru will stop taking Japanese orders for the e-BOXER mild hybrid on September 14, 2026, shifting the Impreza and Crosstrek toward the stronger S:HEV system.

Subaru is retiring its mild-hybrid e-BOXER system, built around the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter flat-four, in Japan. Orders for the current Impreza and Crosstrek with this powertrain close on September 14, 2026, and after that date neither model will be offered with e-BOXER again.

Subaru points to tightening emissions rules and its broader push toward electrification as the reasons behind the move. The 2.0-liter e-BOXER mild hybrid debuted in Japan back in 2018 and later spread to Europe, Asia and Oceania, though it was never officially sold in North America.

Subaru's core hybrid system going forward is S:HEV. It pairs a purpose-built 2.5-liter flat-four with an 88-kW traction motor and a mechanical all-wheel-drive system built around a driveshaft. According to the automaker, fuel economy improves by roughly 20% over the outgoing mild hybrid.

S:HEV already powers the Crosstrek and Forester, and in July 2026 Subaru brought the system to the Levorg Layback. Gasoline-only versions aren't going away, either — the Forester, for instance, is still offered alongside a 1.8-liter turbo engine.

Dropping e-BOXER isn't a retreat from hybrids — it's a shift from low-power electric assistance to a system that can run longer on electric power alone and cut fuel consumption by a wider margin.
