Ford Coyote and Godzilla V8 production in Canada 2029: investment and timeline

Ford has locked in production of two major V8 engines in Canada through at least 2029. A new three-year agreement with the Unifor union commits C$700 million (about $497 million) to the Essex Engine Plant in Ontario. The funding will go toward increasing output of the 5.0-liter Coyote and continued development of the 7.3-liter Godzilla.

An additional third shift is planned to launch in 2029. So the agreement primarily guarantees the plant's and the programs' future, rather than an immediate jump in V8 output. Ford previously announced a third plant tied to the next-generation Super Duty, and the new investment builds on that same strategy. In total, Ford's Canadian investment commitments now stand at C$1.25 billion.

The Coyote powers the Mustang and F-150. The 7.3-liter Godzilla, meanwhile, is aimed primarily at heavy-duty Super Duty trucks and commercial vehicles.

Ford isn't keeping every eight-cylinder engine, though. Production of the 6.8-liter V8 is set to end this quarter after it was dropped from the 2027 model-year Super Duty lineup. The company is concentrating resources on the more in-demand Coyote and Godzilla.

The move shows that electrification isn't pushing V8s out of Ford's most profitable pickups and sports models. But the investment is tied to specific engines and doesn't signal a return of eight-cylinder power across the whole lineup.
